Gulls on Posts, Northumberland
I love this scene with Gulls and Terns competing to land on a group of posts. I like the palette of colours which is relaxing to the eye. Mixed media painting 400 x 500mm
Flying Home
This is one of a series of paintings celebrating the Scottish Hebrides. Digital painting 400x400 Original available
Winter Beach
Walking on a beach in Winter is great for the soul. This painting tries to capture the solace of a deserted beach on a grey day. Digital painting 500x500 Original available
Mudeford Quay in the Sun
Mudeford is one of my favourite places. In this painting I have tried to capture the view of the Quay on a hazy summer’s day with light shimmering on the buildings, harbour side and seascape. Original 400 x 300 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
Sky
I based this painting on a photo I took. The light in the sky was amazing and I have tried to capture it in this painting.
Spirit of the Western Isles
I love the land & seascape of the Western Isles of Scotland. This painting is of nowhere in particular but tries to capture the spirit of the islands with sandy beaches; rocky shores; distant mountains and dramatic skies - all on a bright but wintery day. Original 600 x 400 mm in a light oak frame available.
Northumberland Coast
The Northumberland coast is one of my favourite places. The beaches are amazing and you get huge skies full of drama. All very good for the soul. In this painting I have tried to capture some of that magic. Mixed Media painting 600 x 600 mm.
Low Tide at Mudeford Quay
Painted in 2007 and based on a photograph taken in 2006 from the garden of Harbour House, 1 Hamilton Close, Mudeford. View looking east, down the harbour to the Quay at low tide on a summer evening. Original 500 x 360 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
Low Tide at Farlington Marsh
This painting is based on a view of Farlington Marsh at low tide. The setting sun casting long shadows and the colours taking on a palette of darks and pinks. An old boat lies serenely on the mud, mostly in silhouette. Farlington Marshes is an area of reclaimed land in Langstone Harbour. It was reclaimed from the harbour in 1771 and includes a larger part of what was formerly Binner's Island (the remainder of the island is now referred to as North Binness Island). Farlington Marshes is the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust’s oldest nature reserve. It is a flower-rich grazing marsh on the northern shore of Langstone Harbour internationally important for the bird populations that it supports Original 16 x 16 inches on canvas (sold) Prints & cards available
Baie de Somme 3, Normandy
I love the way the bay empties out at low tide leaving a vast array of coloured sands and pools of water. Mixed Media painting 400 x 600 mm.
Durdle Door, Dorset
Durdle Door is a natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast near Lulworth in Dorset. The name Durdle is derived from the Old English 'thirl' meaning bore or drill. The arch has formed on a concordant coastline where bands of rock run parallel to the shoreline. In this painting I have tried to capture the amazing rock strata, which are almost vertical in places, on a still day in summer. Original 400 x 300 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
Étretat, Normandy
Étretat is best known for its cliffs, including three natural arches and the pointed "needle". These cliffs and the associated resort beach attracted impressionist painters including Eugène Boudin, Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet, and were featured prominently in the 1909 novel The Hollow Needle by Maurice Leblanc. I painted this view after visiting Étretat and wanted to create my own impression of the view from the town on a still autumnal morning. Original 500 x 400 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
Crosby Beach, Lancashire
Crosby beach is a beautiful place, especially as the tide rushes in or out with large areas of shallow water and wet sands. More recently it has become well known as a site for the istallation of statues by Anthony Gormley entitled “Another Place”. I wanted to capture the beauty of the ebb and flow of the tide with a subtle pallette of colours. Original 50 x 40 cm (sold) Prints & cards available
Baie de Somme, Normandy
This is one of a series of paintings exploring the Baie du Somme. When the tide goes out the bay becomes a vast expanse of sand, mud banks and pools of water which form an alsmost abstract array of colour tones and patches of light. This is one of my favourite places to paint. Original 16 x 16 inches on canvas (sold) Prints & cards available
Baie de Somme 2
This is one of a series of paintings exploring the Baie du Somme. When the tide goes out the bay becomes a vast expanse of sand, mud banks and pools of water which form an alsmost abstract array of colour tones and patches of light. This is one of my favourite places to paint. Original 28 x 10 inches on canvas available.
Cromer Pier, Norfolk
This painting is inspired by a photograph which appeared in the Daily Telegraph. In this painting I have tried to capture the contrast between the strong architectural forms of the famous pier against a dramatic natural sunset. I found the combination of colours, light and shade especially pleasing. Original 600 x 40 mm available Prints & cards available
Le Crotoy, Baie de Somme
I painted this view of Le Crotoy after a super holiday in the Baie de Somme. I was intrigued by the view across the bay to Le Crotoy. I wanted to capture the horizontal bands of different colours and textures made up by the land, sea and sky with the town providing a ribbon of detail catching the sunlight. Original 600 x 400 mm available Prints & cards available
Sunset at Farlington Marsh
This painting is based on a photo taken as the sun was setting looking across the marshes and anchorage at Farlington near Portsmouth. I love the contrast between the clouds, brightly lit by the setting sun and the deep shadow tones of the foreground. It is a flower-rich grazing marsh on the northern shore of Langstone Harbour internationally important for the bird populations that it supports. Original 600 x 400 mm available Prints & cards available
The Moeraki Boulders with red ball, New Zealand
The Moeraki Boulders can be found on Koekohe Beach near Otago in New Zealand. They are an amazing sight - huge spherical boulders between half a metre and a metre in circumference, lying on the beach. When I visited them it was a grey murky day and I wanted to capture that in this painting. Another couple were playing with their dog on the beach using a red rubber ball. I included that in the painting to give a pop of colour and a sense of scale.at in the painting to give a sense of scale. Original 20x20 inches (sold) Prints & cards available
Broadford Bay Sunset
The Western Isles of Scotland are a great place to see beautiful sunsets. This view is facing West with the magnificent pinnacle of Sgurr nan Gillean in the Cuillin Mountains , appearing above the layers of hills behind Broadford Bay as seen one late evening in June. During the flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746, he was helped by Captain John MacKinnon. In return he gave the captain the recipe to his own private liqueur. After being made by the MacKinnons for over a century the drink went public in the Broadford Inn in the 1870’s and the name “Drambuie” was registered as a trademark in 1893. Digital painting 400x400 original available
Plozévet, Normandy
Painted in 2006 and based on a photograph taken in 2005 from the garden of Les Cormorans, Plozévet whilst visiting my good friends the Norris family on holiday. View looking eastwards along the coast and the village of Plozévet. Original 500 x 400 mm available Prints & cards available
West Wittering Sunset
This painting of the beach at West Wittering at sunset was inspired by a photograph taken by Mick Mills of City Folk Club. The view across the beach looks directly west with the skyline of Portsmouth, including the Spinnaker Tower, in the distance. I loved the subtle colours and the combination of a natural setting juxtaposed with man’s influence through the old groynes and the cityscape in the background. Original 500 x 400 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
View of Old Harry Rocks
This painting tries to capture the view of Old Harry Rocks on a warm summer day - as seen from the beach at Sandbanks in Dorset. I loved the rippling colours in the sea and the way they contrast with the dark and light tones of Old Harry Rocks caught in bright sunlight and deep shadow. There are two linked schools of thought on who Harry was. One is that “Old Harry” is another term for The Devil who liked to sleep on the rocks. The other is that it is named after infamous Poole Pirate Harry Paye who stowed his contraband nearby. Many of the locals regarded Harry as a servant of the Devil. Original 20 x 10 inches available Prints & cards available
