Lavender at Selborne
Based on a photograph I took at the lavender fields at Hartley Park Farm near Selborne, Hampshire. View looking south - east towards Farringdon. Driving home late one afternoon the fields looked glorious in the sunshine. This painting won the David Yellop Academy Award in the 2010 Petersfield Arts & Crafts Exhibition. Original 500 x 400 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
Barn at Swaledale
This painting is from one of my favourite Yorkshire Dales. These stone barns are very characteristic of the area and form a lovely part of the landscape when out walking the many paths. Seen on a bright day amongst a meadow of early summer flowers. The colours are fabulous, inspired by a photo by David Tarn. Original 400 x 400 mm on canvas available. Prints & cards available
Bluebells at Micheldever
Early one May evening on a back-route home from work I passed through Micheldever Wood near Winchester on my way to Northington. From the road I could see a fantastic carpet of bluebells spread through the wood and just had to stop and look. The atmosphere was overwhelmingly one of calm and serenity with light breaking through the tree canopy and a sea of blue flowers. I hope this painting captures that mood. Original 700 x 400 mm on canvas Prints & cards available
Hebrides 3
This is one of a series of paintings celebrating the ladscape of the Scottish Hebrides and the work of the Scottish Masters painters. Digital painting on canvas 400x400 Original available
Looking South from Cheesefoot Head
The views from Chessefoot Head, near Winchester, are spectacular in all directions. This is a painting of the view looking south as the evening sun casts a golden glow across the sky. On the northern side is the famous natural amphitheatre like bowl where General Eisenhower addressed the troops prior to D-Day. Original 600 x 380 mm available Prints & cards available
Near Old Winchester Hill
A classic view of the Hampshire countryside looking across the Meon Valley near Old Winchester Hill. Digital painting 600 x 400 Original available
View from The South Bank
One of my favourite places to walk is along the South bank of the Thames in London. The iconic lights along the path form a great feature which I have tried to capture here. Original 400 x 300 mm available Prints & cards available
View from the South Bank
I have painted this view of St. Paul’s from the South Bank a number of times. In this one I wanted to try and capture the colours of the cathedral and surrounding buildings set against a dramatic sky and creating bold reflections in the water. Original 500 x 400 mm available Prints & cards available
Ben Tianavaig, Skye
Commissioned in 2010, this painting depicts a view of Ben Tianavaig in Skye. The view is from the Isle of Raasay looking across the Narrows of Raasay to Skye. The mountain in the background is viewed looking north-west from the coast of Raasay between Clachan and Oskaig. On a bright and still day the scene is very evocative of the western isles of Scotland. Original 600 x 380 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
My Favourite Chestnut Tree
Chestnut trees are amongst my favourite. I love the way they stand so impressively and produce an amazing canopy of leaves; flowers and fruit each year. In this painting I have tried to represent this amazing annual cycle. Original 680 x 300 mm available Prints & cards available
Val D'Orcia, Tuscany
The landscape of Val d’Orcia is part of the agricultural hinterland of Siena, redrawn and developed when it was integrated in the territory of the city-state in the 14th and 15th centuries to reflect an idealized model of an aesthetically pleasing picture. The landscape’s distinctive aesthetics have inspired many artists. The area exemplifies the beauty of a well-managed Renaissance landscape. In 1999 the area was protected as an Artistic, Natural and Cultural Park and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. In this painting I have tried to capture the beauty of the ascending route lined with Cypress trees and reflecting the warm Tuscan sunshine through a summer haze. Original 400 x 400 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
Headlands Warren Farm, Dorset
This painting is based on a photograph taken by Richard Knights. The colour contrast between the heather and the moorland grasses was stunning. The farm features one of the few remaining Devon Longhouses. Viewed looking eastwards from Headland Warren near Challacombe Down, in the middle of the Two Tors Way. Hookney Tor is on the left and Hameldown Tor on the right. The area between the Tors is Grimspound used by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as Grimspound Mire in the “Hound of the Baskervilles”. Original 600 x 380 mm available Prints & cards available
Poppies
A field of poppies is a brilliant sight. The way they just appear randomly and look so vibrant but delicate adds to their appeal and charm. In this painting I wanted to depict them from a low angle showcasing some of the flowers against a summer sky. Original 600 x 480 mm available Prints & cards available
Misty Morning
A view from the Hampshire Downs on an early summer morning with the rising sunlight catching low-lying mist. I loved the atmoshere and array of colours. Digital painting 500 x 250 portrait Original available
Poppies at Cranborne Chase
The sight of a field full of poppies is a wonderful thing. Cranborne Chase is a good place for finding them. In this painting I have tried to capture how the carpet of poppies generates a sea of bright red tones across the landscape. Cranborne Chase is an area of chalk downland straddling the Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset borders. The village of Cranborne nearby was founded by Saxons. The word “chase” comes from the use of the area by royal hunting parties in Tudor times. Original 500 x 500 mm on canvas available. Prints & cards available
A Walk on The Downs
This painting was inspired by many happy hours spent walking on the South Downs - now a National Park. The South Downs Way takes you along a coastal path up and over beautiful chalk down-land. In the painting I have tried to capture the sheer beauty and pleasure of walking in the downs on a summer’s day. This may be as close as I will ever get to a self-portrait! Original 600 x 600 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
Sundown at Plozevet
I was staying in a house on Plozevet, Brittany and was treated to this glorious sunset one eveing. I wanted to capture the silhouette of the houses against the vibrant colours of the sky. Digital painting 500x500 Original available
On the road to Sienna
Based on a photograph taken in August 2005 whilst driving in Tuscany from Podgi to Sienna. It was an incredibly hot late afternoon; the sky a brilliant blue and the fields dry from the summer sun. Original 500 x 400 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
A Dusting of Snow in Warfdale
This painting is from one of my favourite Yorkshire Dales. I originally painted this as a demonstration item to show how painting techniques used in theatrical scenery could be brought into landscape painting. I wanted to paint a winter snow scene with the sun very low so it casts long shadows across the landscape. This enabled me to use a limited palette of only 4 colours plus white. I love the subtle tones and the fact that although it is a snowy winter scene, there is very little pure white in the painting. Original 600 x 280 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
St. Paul's from the South Bank
This is one of my favourite views in London - walking along the South Bank on a sunny day and looking across to St. Paul’s from Gabriel’s Wharf. Wren’s masterpiece is surely one of the great iconic buildings in the world. I wanted to capture the majesty of the cathedral and also record the threat to the London skyline posed by the ever present development of tall buildings as indicated by the presence of the cranes. It will be a great disaster if views like this are lost. Original 600 x 600 mm available Prints & cards available
Storm Clouds Over Woolmer Ranges
I painted this scene after driving past the army ranges near Whitehill, one bleak morning in February. Leaden skies were threatening heavy rain and pools of water in the marshy ground near Woolmer Pond were reflecting light amongst a spread of winter colours. The view looks across to Woolmer Forest and Horsebush Hill in the Brimstone Inclosure where there are some ancient Tumuli. Original 400 x 400 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
Combe Basset Down, Dorset
this painting was inspired by walking around Combe Basset whilst travelling through Cranborne Chase in the North Dorset / Wiltshire downlands. On a bright summer day I loved the colours and feeling of warmth from the sun-dried grasses and meadow flowers. I have tried to capture this in the painting. Original 600 x 400 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
St. Paul's with Blue Tint
Original 300 x 300 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
View from Colyton, Devon
Looking eastwards from Colyton across the Axe Valley to Trinity Hill and the Sir Harry Hill Plantation. Park Farm, of Hugh Fernley-Wittingstall fame, lies near the centre of the view. Just prior to the start of autumn the fields were a patchwork of many greens. Original 500 x 400 mm (sold) Prints & cards available
