Lavender at Selborne, Hampshire
Based on a photograph taken at the lavender fields at Hartley Park Farm near Selborne, Hampshire. View looking south - east towards Farringdon. Driving home late one afternoon the fields looked glorious in the sunshine. I had to stop and marvel at the wonderful colours. This painting won the David Yellop Academy Award in the 2010 Petersfield Arts & Crafts Exhibition.
Looking South from Cheesefoot Head
My Favourite Chestnut Tree
View from the South Bank
Barn at Swaledale, Yorkshire
This painting is from one of my favourite Yorkshire Dales. These stone barns are very characteristic of the area and form a lovely part of the landscape when out walking the many paths. Seen on a bright day amongst a meadow of early summer flowers. The colours are fabulous, inspired by a photo by David Tarn. Original painting available 40x40 cm + Framed print 40x40 + prints & cards
Ben Tianavaig, Skye
Commissioned in 2010 by Roz Richardson to celebrate husband Drew’s birthday, this painting depicts a view of Ben Tianavaig in Skye. The view is from the Isle of Raasay looking across the Narrows of Raasay to Skye. The mountain in the background is viewed looking north-west from the coast of Raasay between Clachan and Oskaig. On a bright and still day the scene is very evocative of the western isles of Scotland. Print available + cards
Walking on The Downs
This painting was inspired by many happy hours spent walking on the South Downs - now a National Park. The South Downs Way takes you along a coastal path up and over beautiful chalk down-land. In the painting I have tried to capture the sheer beauty and pleasure of walking in the downs on a summer’s day. This may be as close as I will ever get to a self-portrait! Prints & cards available
Bosham Harbour, Sussex
On a walk from West Itchenor to Bosham in Chichester Harbour I took a photo of this view of Bosham. Looking North West across the creek you get a beautiful view of the entire harbour front of the village. The centre piece is dominated by Holy Trinity Church which is depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry as it was from Bosham that Earl Harold, later King Harold, set sail on his ill-fated trip to Normandy in 1064. There is also a long held tradition that early in the 11th century King Canute’s young daughter was drowned in the millstream and was buried in the church. In this painting I have adapted the colours to try and capture the harmony of the beautiful view. Prints & cards available
Headlands Warren Farm, Dartmoor
Painted in 2008 and based on a photograph taken by Richard Knights. The colour contrast between the heather and the moorland grasses was stunning. The farm features one of the few remaining Devon Longhouses. Viewed looking eastwards from Headland Warren near Challacombe Down, in the middle of the Two Tors Way. Hookney Tor is on the left and Hameldown Tor on the right. The area between the Tors is Grimspound used by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as Grimspound Mire in the “Hound of the Baskervilles”. Original painting available 50x40 cm + prints & cards
On the Road to Siena, Tuscany
I based this painting on on a photograph I took whilst driving in Tuscany from Podgi to Sienna. It was an incredibly hot late afternoon; the sky a brilliant blue and the fields dry from the summer sun. Prints & cards available
Val D'Orcia, Tuscany
The landscape of Val d’Orcia is part of the agricultural hinterland of Siena, redrawn and developed when it was integrated in the territory of the city-state in the 14th and 15th centuries to reflect an idealized model of an aesthetically pleasing picture. The landscape’s distinctive aesthetics have inspired many artists. The area exemplifies the beauty of a well-managed Renaissance landscape. In 1999 the area was protected as an Artistic, Natural and Cultural Park and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. In this painting I have tried to capture the beauty of the ascending route lined with Cypress trees and reflecting the warm Tuscan sunshine through a summer haze. Prints and cards available
St.Paul's Catherdral, London
This is one of my favourite views in London - walking along the South Bank on a sunny day and looking across to St. Paul’s from Gabriel’s Wharf. Wren’s masterpiece is surely one of the great iconic buildings in the world. I wanted to capture the majesty of the cathedral and also record the threat to the London skyline posed by the ever present development of tall buildings as indicated by the presence of the cranes. It will be a great disaster if views like this are lost. Original painting 60x60 cm in acrylics & inks on canvas available + prints & cards
Bluebells at Micheldever, Hampshire
Early one May evening on a back-route home from work I passed through Micheldever Wood near Winchester on my way to Northington. From the road I could see a fantastic carpet of bluebells spread through the wood and just had to stop and look. The atmosphere was overwhelmingly one of calm and serenity with light breaking through the tree canopy and a sea of blue flowers. I hope this painting captures that mood. Original painting available 60x60 cm plus prints & cards
